2011 Predictions
We asked the GMSOMAC Board of Directors on their predictions for business in 2011. Here are the responses:
Michael Gallagher, President of GMUSOMAC:
- The U.S. economy will begin to recover quicker than any of us currently expect
- China’s housing property/housing bubble will burst (http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2010/11/17/chanos-vs-china/)
- The use of social media by American businesses will soar
Tracy Tran, Vice President of Outreach:
- Unemployment will be around 8.5-8.8%.
- The 2011 device everyone will need for their business: a front-face camera smartphone and/or tablet.
- The Society of Human Resources Management will be treated like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from HR pros, while the local SHRM chapters carry their mission in their own area.
- We will hear more HR professionals talk about their industry, not their profession.
- Keywords we will hear in 2011: Part-time flexibility.
- Big nonprofits will be steady, but small nonprofits will either merge with other nonprofits or deceased in their operations.
- There will be a lot of position opens titled: “Social Media Manager,” “Community Manager,” “People Manager,” and “Outreach Coordinator.”
Ian Bush, Director-at-Large:
- National unemployment will be under 7.5% by the end of the 2011.
- Mobile and Location Specific Applications (like Four Square) will be the #1 technology topics in 2011.
- Gas prices will approach $4/gallon next summer as the economy gains strength.
John Eisenschmidt, Director-at-Large:
- Entering Year Three of the Presidential Cycle and Bull Market
- Wall St. Computers Read the News, and Trade on It
